A Diagnostic Approach towards enhancing the growth and performance of a Library

Background
The underlying message of this workshop was that librarians need to transform themselves from Information Managers to Knowledge Managers. Consistent with this premise, librarians need to view their library as a dynamic organization that has to change to suit the needs of current Internet-savvy users who have been exposed to :

  • cutting-edge technology in information delivery
  • the competitiveness of the corporate culture
  • the global acceptance of knowledge as the asset that drives corporate success
  • new management methods incorporated in concepts like ‘strategic management’, ‘management by objectives’, etc.

In order for librarians to respond to the changing environment, they need to guide their libraries through an evolutionary process – from one that is traditionally book-based and dependent on manual processes to one that functions as a Knowledge Centre, using the Digital Library as the catalyst.

Guided by a strategic plan, the library will be able to position itself for the successful achievement of its goals within a stipulated period of time.

The issue that needed to be addressed was : Are librarians contented to continue doing what they have been doing for so long even when the environment around them has changed ?

The above Workshop was designed to :


1.1.1 Highlight the changing role of the librarian from managing information to managing knowledge ;

1.1.2 Stress the importance of strategic management in general and developing the strategic plan in particular in transforming the library into a Knowledge Centre ;

1.1.3 Understand how to use strategic planning tools, beginning with the SWOT Analysis, to develop strategic directions (vision, mission), strategic goals and objectives and;

1.1.4 Ultimately formulating strategies based on the strengths and weaknesses found in its internal environment and the opportunities and threats afforded by its external environment.

2.0 Key Learnings that took place :


2.1 The various stages of developing a Strategic Plan for an Organization;

2.2 The tools and techniques of performing a SWOT analysis in an organization;

2.3 Using the Balance Score Card as a strategy development and management tool and

2.4 Developing Key Performance Indicators for the Library.
